About Van Gogh's Sunflowers Painting:
Vincent van Gogh's oil on canvas painting of the Sunflowers is one of four paintings of sunflowers dating from August and September 1888. It is said that these paintings were intended to decorate the room of Gauguin in the 'Yellow House' he rented in Aries in the South of France. Van Gogh and Gauguin worked there together between October and December 1888.
The dying flowers are built up with thick brushstrokes, a technique called impasto, which evokes the texture of the seed-heads. The various versions and replicas of this painting, that Van Gogh produced in 1889 remain much debated among Van Gogh scholars.
