The Olympics Games in Rio might have only just started but there’s some still plenty of fantastic sporting events to come in 2016. If the Olympics have got you in the mood for sport then you’ll be excited with what's still to come this year. Obviously there's a lot of sporting events still to happen but we’ve handpicked the best ones still to come. Here’s our list!
13th August - Premier League Season Starts
After the incredible journey of Leicester City winning the Premier League last year all eyes will be watching to see if they can defend their title. The Premier League is set to kick off on 13th August with 7 matches throughout the day starting from 12:30pm to 5:30pm in the evening. The first match will be the champions Leicester City against the hopeful Hull City at 12:30 on 13th August.
27th August - Rugby League Challenge Cup Final
If you’re a big fan of Rugby then be sure not to miss this one! The Rugby League Challenger cup final will take place on 27th August at Wembley Stadium. The Challenger Cup is Rugby League's oldest and most prestigious competition and is the only knock-out tournament of its kind. This time round it will be Warrington Wolves vs Hull FC battling it out to see who can claim the cup in front of 90,000 fans.
29th August - US Open
One of the most prestigious tennis events on the calendar will be taking place later this August on the 29th when the US Open returns. The US Open is the final major tennis tournament of the year making the 4 grand slam with the Australian Open, French Open and Wimbledon. The current champion Novak Djokovic will return to try and win his 3rd title, not without some strong competition from Andy Murray.
2nd September - F1 Italian Grand Prix
One of the longest running events on the Formula One calendar is set to return this September in the Italian town of Monza. Last year’s winner Lewis Hamilton will be looking to return to claim his 4th Italian Grand Prix title. This action packed race is sure to be a must watch and will have you at the edge of your seat for all 53 laps.
4th September - MotoGP British Grand Prix
If you’re a fan of motor bikes and GP then be sure to tune in to this adrenaline fueled race. Taking place at Silverstone it is the last year the event will be held there before it moves to its new circuit in Wales. Originally planned to be held at the new circuit this year, due to construction delays the circuit has not been finished. The event will feature all the top riders including Valentino Rossi, Jorge Lorenzo and Marc Marquez who will be battling it out to claim glory.
30th September - Ryder Cup
If you’re a big fan of Golf then be sure to mark this date in your diary. The famous Ryder Cup returns to the US at the Hazel National Golf Club in Minnesota from 30th September. Running until the 2nd October the 41st Ryder Cup will feature teams from Europe and USA battling it out to claim the trophy. Currently Europe are the cup holders having won the previous Ryders Cups since 2010.
14th November - ATP World Tour Finals
Another prestigious tennis event this year is the ATP World Tour Finals that will be held in the O2 Arena at London. Featuring the top 8 singles players and double teams of the ATP rankings the competition marks the end of the tennis season. The current champion is Novak Djokovic who has been on a roll in recent years, placing within the top 2 of all major tennis events throughout the year. He will definitely be looking to claim the first place again after fighting off tough competition from Roger Federer and Andy Murray.
25th November - F1 Final Race of the Season
Bringing the F1 season to a close is the final race held in Abu Dhabi on 25th November. One of the newest races on the F1 calendar, it has been held since 2009 at the Yas Marina circuit in Abu Dhabi. Last year’s winner Nico Rosberg will be returning to defend his victory while Britain's Lewis Hamilton will be giving it his all to try and claim the first place. As the last race of the season it’s sure to be an exciting one!
