International Talk Like A Pirate Day
Friday, 18 September 2015 | Admin
Ahoy Buckos! It is that time of year again where children and adults alike, around the globe, will be joinin' in th' a ruckas of speaking like pirates. Perhaps dressing up and playing a few games too, the adults amongst us may include a wee bit 'o 'spiced rum.
So where did this day all begin? Well according to Wikipedia, International Talk Like a Pirate Day, September 19, was created in 1995 by John Baur, also known as Ol' Chumbucket and Mark Summers, or Cap'n Slappy, from Oregon, US, who proclaimed September 19 each year as the day when all in the world should talk like a pirate. So, when you pick up the phone to a friend (Bucko) over the weekend, don't answer hello, answer Ahoy!
According to information available, Summers indicates that creating the day came as a result of a sports injury during a racquetball game between Summers and Baur, with one of them reacting to the pain with an outburst of "Aaarrr" - the idea was born.
For the Kids: The original and as far as we can tell, the official Talk Like A Pirate Day website offers a raft of information, history, fun and games
For the adults: Have a day off scrubbin' th' decks and pull out those pirate related DVD's, set in the Caribbean and enjoy!
I'm sure the social media platforms on the 19th will be filled with joy and Aaaarrrs - Comment below with your best Talk Like A Pirate line, we would love to hear them all.
